Communications & Information Technology Training (CITT), through its industry experience, has engaged with telecommunications stakeholders to determine the industry training needs for the next few years. This feedback has identified that there are not enough qualified trainers to meet future training needs.
According to the recently released 2010 ICT and Telecommunications Environment Scan by Innovation & Business Skills Australia (IBSA), it is estimated that an additional 25,000 telecommunications workers (particularly cablers and fibre optical engineers) are required to deliver the Commonwealth Governments NBN and digital switchover rollouts across Australia - with approximately 5,000 required for Victoria.
There is a strong need to up-skill or cross-skill existing telecommunications workers, as well as attract and train new entrants to meet the forthcoming demands of delivering these projects. To do this, there needs to be enough trainers and assessors with the necessary combination of technical knowledge and training qualifications to carry out that function through the various telecommunications industry sectors.
CITT are working on a Telecommunication Trainers Demonstration project which aims to harness the experience and expertise of technical workers to leverage the opportunities created by the Commonwealth Governments Broadband and Digital rollouts, both of which are considered areas of strategic economic importance.
This project is a Victorian demonstration program to ensure that the training sector has the capabilities to meet the training demands of enterprises. The Project aims to increase the number and quality of telecommunications trainers in Victoria in an effort to skill the landscape required to create a high speed broadband environment in Victoria.
The project group for this will target Victorians who have been redeployed, or made redundant, or wish to change their careers into the training area of the telecommunications industry.
The target group for this project include identified regional and state-wide telecommunication people who wish to engage in up-skilling as trainers by enrolling in a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and the required telecommunications certificates.
